Russia has again reached out to Nigerian authorities to secure the release of seven of its citizens who are being held in Nigeria on charges of arms smuggling. 15 Russian sailors were apprehended aboard the vessel: MV Myre Seadiver by the Nigerian Navy in October 2012.
The charges against eight of them were dropped and the remaining seven are currently being tried for allegedly being in possession of 14 AK-47 rifles with 3,643 rounds of ammunition and 22 Benelli MR1 rifles with 4,955 rounds of ammunition.
According to a statement issued by the Russian Embassy in Abuja Thursday, Russia’s Foreign Minister, Mr. Sergey Lavrov met with Nigeria's Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly currently holding in New York.
