Happy 53rd Independence Day Nigeria!

GOD BLESS NIGERIA……….
-Green for agriculture
white for the peaceful nature,
in which the leaders toy with
killing the smiles of the citizens.

-Like cloud of rain
they cover the sunny glory at day,
spoiling the smiles of heroes in the grave
that even the oracle have nothing to say.

-Small criminals judged with
the crimes of poli-theives,
yet the real guilty people
are honored with more titles.

-Where “let me strive to eat the national cake”
is what young ones crave,
“its the govt not the peoples money”
is what the poli-theives are saying. -Fight to split    (biafra)
of which many were killed,
and the NIGER’s and BOKO’s jeopardize
what the NIGER and BENUE unite

-Lets stop the parasite called corruption
from eating deep into the nation
‘cus we aren’t the worst and not yet the best
just praying for the generation coming next.

-The labour of our heroes past
shall never be in vane;
GOD BLESS NIGERIA
thats we now pray.

It seems as though our “Nollywood Bad Boy” Jim Iyke is turning a new leaf! Over the last few days, his tweets have taken a spiritual turn
and now this is photos and details on Jim’s “ deliverance” at Prophet T.B. Joshua‘s Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) .
First up, the tweets!
When God wants u to move frm a comfort zone n u drag ur feet he introduces discomfort to expedite d process.Trust n obey.A higher realm awaits

Amen Mornin y’all

And then the deliverance…
Making a surprise appearance in The SCOAN, Nollywood superstar Jim Iyke entered quietly and unannounced, joining worshippers from around the world as they listened to the inspiring message
from renowned Prophet T.B. Joshua.
As The SCOAN’s Wise Men moved through the congregation in prayer, the lightning of God located Iyke and he was no longer able to control himself. Lunging towards
one of the Wise Man as if to attack him, an evil spirit that had been tormenting the life of Jim Iyke manifested! The congregation in the auditorium and the overflow congregations shouted in surprise as they began to witness the deliverance of a man they were all too familiar with.
Jim Iyke, born James Ikechukwu
Esomugha, is currently one of the highest paid actors in the Nigerian movie industryband cultivated the name “Nollywood bad boy” for himself. As one of the most successful actors in Nollywood, he has starred in over 150 films to date. He has launched his own film production unit,
“Untamed Productions” and his own music label, “Untamed Records” with his very own album, “Who Am I?” He is also founder of “Jim Iyke Foundation”, contributing funds to children of the less
privileged and children with physical challenges.

Among his movie awards are: The Teenage Choice Award, Best Actor In Nigerian Entertainment Award, African Achievement Award, Best Actor of the Year (Mode Men Award 2010), Sexiest Man In Nigeria 2008, Best African Actor (NET Awards).
The evil spirit that had tormented the life of Jim Iyke for so many years began to manifest, confessing that it was the cause
of Iyke’s setback and disappointment. It confessed that it was the reason he could never marry, stating that it would not
allow him to love anyone. It continued confessing that Iyke was the biggest and that it was only God’s grace that had kept him. As the evil spirit inside him struggled
to attack the Wise Man, the supremacy of the Holy Spirit continued to overpower it.
The deliverance continued but the battle was not against flesh and blood; it was against the spiritual entities that had been causing crisis in his life, family, health career and future. To the jubilation of the congregation, the name of Jesus Christ prevailed over the
evil spirit and Jim Iyke received his
freedom. Overwhelmed with what had just happened, Iyke immediately knelt in God’s presence, appreciating His Creator for his miraculous deliverance.
The humility demonstrated by Jim Iyke in submitting himself to the power of God should prompt others in his industry to make the same life-saving choice.
This seems to be a positive turn for Jim Iyke. Wishing him all the best!

PHCN: Jonathan gives share certificates, licences to core investors

At last, Nigeria has found light at the end of the tunnel after years of groping in darkness following President Goodluck Jonathan today
hand over the share certificates and licences to the 15 new owners of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) successor companies who have made 100 per cent payment of the respective bid amounts.
The presentation, which is scheduled to hold in Abuja is part of the build-up to the activities
to mark the 53rd Independence anniversary of Nigeria.
The Director General of the BPE, Mr. Benjamin Dikki noted that “this handover is a culmination of 14 years of painstaking effort by the National Council on Privatization (NCP),
Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and other key stakeholders to reform and liberalise Nigeria’s electricity industry, which began in
1999”.
Recall that the Electric Power Sector Reform Implementation Committee (EPIC) was set up in
2000 with the key mandate to proffer an appropriate legal and regulatory framework for the sector.
This gave birth to the National Electric Power Policy which was approved by the Federal Executive Council in September 2001 followed by the passage of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005. The passage of the Act gave the NCP/BPE the legal impetus to set up the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) also in 2005.
The NCP/BPE went further to vertically unbundle the integrated monopoly into three segments of Generation, Transmission and
Distribution Companies. As part of the reform initiative, NEPA was transformed into Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
To further give teeth to the reform, in August 2010, President Jonathan launched the Presidential Roadmap on Power Reform with
two key advisory organs, namely, the Presidential Action Committee on Power and the Presidential Taskforce on Power.
The Bureau published advertisements for expressions of interest by prospective investors
in the eleven distribution companies and six generation companies between December 13
and 20, 2010, in both local and international media.
So far, out of the 14 successor companies scheduled for handover, a total of $2,525,824,534 was realized as proceeds. Out of the amount, $1,256,000,000.00 came from the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) while the Generation Companies (GENCOs) raked in $1,269,824,534. The Federal Government has equally set aside
about N384 billion to settle labour liabilities.

Bale eager to repay Real Madrid support

Gareth Bale says he is eager to improve at Real Madrid in order to repay the support from the Blancos faithful following his home debut on Sunday.
The Welshman came on as a second-half substitute in his side's 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid, and
while he acknowledges the "fantastic" reception he received, Bale is desperate to help his side
get back to winning ways quickly.
"Playing at the Bernabeu was a fantastic experience, but the important thing would have been winning," he was quoted as saying by the club's official website. "It was a difficult match because they were well organized defensively and after the goal it was tough because of how they play. In the second half we kept trying, without
success.
"I went on in the second half and I felt good but I have to improve. It was a fantastic experience and I have to play better every day to pay back that affection. We try to win every match and now we don’t feel good, but we have to think
about the next match that we have on Wednesday [against Copenhagen]. Personally, I
will be looking to play well and keep improving. I will prepare in the right way and try to help the
team get the three points."

Mancini arrives in Istanbul to finalize Galatasaray deal

Roberto Mancini has arrived in Istanbul to finalize a deal with
Galatasaray to replace Fatih Terim .
The Italian coach emerged as the leading candidate to replace the legendary Turk over the weekend following his dismissal from the club last week. Negotiations between the two parties are at an
advanced stage, with the only sticking points being Mancini's desire to install his own assistants and have the option to negotiate with an international team.
He will reportedly earn a salary of over 5 million euros per year in the Super Lig across the course of a three-year deal, with official
confirmation of his arrival expected on Monday. Terim led Galatasaray to two Turkish titles during the most recent of his three spells in charge of the club, but a falling out with president Unal
Aysal led to his dismissal.
Mancini, meanwhile, has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester City at the end of
last season.

BlackBerry’s Future in Doubt, Keyboard Lovers Bemoan Their Own

What is a BlackBerry user to
do? After teaching the world to type on tiny buttons, BlackBerry could soon be leaving the business of making phones — leaving fewer options for a vocal minority still
committed to phones with its once popular physical keyboard.
“It’s not good, not good at all,” said Gord Rosko, the president of GR
Communications, a consulting firm in Edmonton, Alberta.
Mr. Rosko said he had used BlackBerrys for about nine years. “What I call my fat Polish fingers have a hard time with touch-screen keyboards. So I’m going to
keep using this thing until I can’t
anymore.”
The possibility that BlackBerry would exit the handset business was only reinforced on Friday, when the company announced
disastrous financial results including a quarterly loss of nearly $1 billion. BlackBerry had warned last week that the results would be bad, heightening expectations that it would put less focus on handsets.
In the last few years, most smartphone users have switched to touch-screen models, like the iPhone, with virtual keyboards that appear on a glass screen.
That has left few good alternatives for people like Mr. Rosko, especially beyond BlackBerry.
Charles Golvin, an analyst at Forrester who tracks the handset market, said most phones with buttons were inexpensive models aimed at teenagers. Most use slide-
out keyboards, but those add extra weight and heft. He offered simple advice for people sticking to a physical keyboard.
“The way you now interact with phones is through touch screens. Get over it,” he said. “Maybe the message isn’t just get over it; it’s give touch screens a chance.” Still, the chances that some company will try to pick up BlackBerry’s single-digit market share are good.

Ted Schadler, Forrester’s vice president and principal
analyst, said he expected some companies to experiment with keyboards.
“Then there’s a big question mark of whether people will go for them,” he said. The experiments may actually come from the companies that overtook BlackBerry in smartphones.
Samsung Electronics, whose Android-based phones are a leader in smartphone sales, has already offered phones with physical keyboards. But more important, it is aggressively going after professionals, who were the first adopters of the BlackBerry
and who appear to disproportionately remain its final users. This year it introduced Knox, a set of security features for Android aimed at government and
corporate users. Motorola Mobility, as it rebuilds itself under Google’s ownership, might also re-enter the keyboard phone market, too.
Before the Google takeover, some of its most popular Android phones included a slide-out keyboard.
Mr. Golvin said he was skeptical about any company trying to build a high-end smartphone with a physical keyboard.
BlackBerry’s method of combining a
screen and keyboard significantly reduces screen size, he said. The smaller screen often requires developers to tweak their apps to work on the different size, making
some reluctant to make apps that work on the phones.
But more important, Mr. Golvin said, is that the overwhelming majority of smartphone users have spoken and found that the downsides of on-screen keyboards
— namely, more typos — are outweighed by a variety of other advantages.
While there remains a chance that
BlackBerry will continue to churn out handsets, the company’s results on Friday underscored how big of a challenge that would be. Because the handset business
requires a large sales volume to be
profitable and to sustain development, many analysts expect BlackBerry to focus its remaining resources on software and services for corporations.
That strategy could change if the company is sold. The company’s largest shareholder has made a tentative and conditional offer
to buy the 90 percent of BlackBerry’s stock it does not own. But many analysts expect BlackBerry to soon leave the business of making phones regardless of the owner.
The loss reported on Friday mainly
reflected a $934 million write-down of a growing inventory of unwanted BlackBerry Z10 phones, the devices that the company
had hoped would restore its fortunes, as well as $72 million in charges related.largely to layoffs.
The $1.6 billion in revenue during the three-month period that ended Aug. 31 was well below the $3 billion analysts had expected and reflected a 49 percent drop
from the first quarter, Phone sales were just as bad during the period. While BlackBerry said that 5.9
million BlackBerry phones were sold to customers during the quarter, many were from inventory that had been shipped to wholesalers and carriers in an earlier quarter. During the last quarter, BlackBerry shipped just 3.7 million phones. And most of those phones, the company said, were older models that it plans to phase out.
Still, there are the devotees, like Jonathan M. Lindsey, a public affairs consultant in Phoenix.
“I am concerned that I’ll have to change the way I do my work,” he said. He said he had tested both an iPhone and an Android phone, and found that neither allowed him to type as quickly as a
BlackBerry or manage his e-mail as
effectively.
But Mr. Lindsey, who said that he was in his early 30s, said that after eight years, he was resigned to the fact that the physical keyboard may soon become a thing of his past.
“I’m not opposed to going through the process of adapting,” he said.

Carey Mulligan Mulls Over a Brunette Hairdo

Carey Mulligan just turned to the dark side … again!
The 28-year-old actress, who is quickly becoming a hair chameleon, ditched her platinum blond coif in favor of dark, chestnut
locks for the premiere of her new movie,
"Inside Llewyn Davis" on Saturday evening at the New York Film Festival. "The Great Gastby" actress struck a dramatic pose on the red carpet in a black, bejeweled halter dress with barely-there slits to show off.her taut tummy. She polished off her look with a pair of black satin pumps and a set of
manicured brows to add extra oomph to her new hair color. Her husband, Mumford and Sons frontman Marcus Mumford, accompanied her.
Mulligan's darker 'do seemed fitting for the evening, since the last time she rocked the dark shade was for her role in the Coen
Brothers-directed film in 2012. The movie, which co-stars Oscar Isaac, follows the life of a young singer in New York City's folk scene in 1961.
Despite the fact that the British babe is naturally a brunette, we can't help but miss her light locks.

Nigeria: ACF, Oyakhire Flay FG Over ASUU Strike

Former Military Administrator of Taraba and Oyo States, Dr Amen Oyakhire has asked the Federal Government to address the grievances of members of the
Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, which has led to the closure of universities in the last 88 days, saying that "government is not treating ASUU
properly."
Oyakhire spoke in an interview with Saturday Vanguard in Benin City, as the strike by ASUU entred its 88th day today. This was even as the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, also yesterday called on the Federal Government and ASUU to reach amicable settlement to end the ongoing strike by university lecturers.
National Publicity Secretary of ACF, Mr Anthony Sani, who made this known said the strike had brought untold hardship on students, parents and the education sector, and needed to be called off.
In Bida, Niger State, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, also asked the National Assembly to fast track the amendment of the Polytechnic Act to meet modern reality.
ASUP National President, Mr Chibuzor Asomugha, spoke at the union's 75th National Executive Council Meeting at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida.
ASUU had on July 1, this year embarked on a strike it described as "comprehensive, total and indefinite," following the non-implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, the union signed with the Federal Government in 2009.
Last Thursday, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, also gave the Federal Government a two-weeks ultimatum to resolve its problem with ASUU to avert the total closure of all public schools in the country.
The NUT is made up of teachers in public primary and secondary schools across Nigeria.
NUT President, Michael Olukoya, gave the ultimatum in Abuja at the end of the union's meeting with teachers' representatives across the country.
Olukoya stressed that members of the union would not hesitate to close down the nation's schools, if the two parties failed to reach agreement after two weeks, adding that "the current ASUU strike is nationalistic, patriotic and self-
sacrificing."

Samantha Lewthwaite: The white widow

She was a “shy” girl from Buckinghamshire but the name Samantha Lewthwaite is once again being linked to a global atrocity.
The media have linked her to the Kenyan shopping centre attack.
Speculation has been fuelled by the Kenyan foreign minister who said one of the militants from the Somali-based al-Shabab group was a British woman.
And suspicion was heightened when international crime agency Interpol issued a wanted persons notice for her arrest. But the warrant – requested by the Kenyans –relates to separate terror charges dating from 2011 and is not linked to the Nairobi siege.
There has been no confirmation of Ms. Lewthwaite’s involvement, either as an attacker, organiser or fundraiser. Al-Shabab has denied that any women were involved.
Whitehall officials continue to advise caution about reports linking her to the attack, says the BBC’s security correspondent Frank
Gardner.
A photo from a fake South African passport alleged to belong to Samantha Lewthwaite under an assumed name. Her notoriety though, confirmed by the Interpol warrant, is not in doubt.
Ms. Lewthwaite, 29, was first thrust into the spotlight after the July 7 bombings in London in 2005, as the widow of bomber Germaine
Lindsay, who killed 26 people when he blew up a Piccadilly Line Tube train near King’s Cross.
A Muslim convert dubbed the “White Widow” by much of the media, she has no terrorism record in the UK but was on the run from
Kenyan Police before the Westgate attack, allegedly using a South Africa passport over suspected links to a terrorist cell that planned
to bomb the country’s coast Interpol’s red notice is a recognition that she is now considered an international threat, not just someone who should be regarded as a passport fraudster, says BBC home affairs correspondent Dominic Casciani.
The notice says Ms. Lewthwaite is “wanted by Kenya on charges of being in possession of explosives and conspiracy to commit a felony
dating back to December 2011.”
After the July 7 attacks, Ms. Lewthwaite condemned her husband’s actions as “abhorrent”, saying trips to radical mosques
had “poisoned his mind.” “How these people could have turned him and poisoned his mind is dreadful,” she told The Sun. “He was an innocent, naive and simple
man. I suppose he must have been an ideal candidate,” she said.
But not long after the attack she disappeared. She was known to be in Kenya and, last year, officials said she had fled to Somalia and the police were hunting a woman who used several identities, including hers. Lewthwaite attended the Grange School in
Aylesbury.
She spent much of her life in the
Buckinghamshire town of Aylesbury, although her very early years were spent in Northern Ireland.
Born to English soldier Andy Lewthwaite –who met and married Christine Allen while serving in Northern Ireland during the 1970s
– she spent her childhood on the Whyte Acres estate in Banbridge, County Down.
Ms Lewthwaite was still at primary school when her family moved to Aylesbury, where they lived in a modest terraced house. Her
parents separated in 1995.
Raj Khan, an Aylesbury councillor who has known her for decades, told the BBC she was an average girl. Samantha Lewthwaite married July 7 bomber Germaine Lindsay in 2002
“I knew her when she was a child,” he said. “She was very innocent, lacking confidence, shy and very easy to get on with. She was a
follower not a leader.”
It is understood she has had little contact with relatives in Northern Ireland, including her 85-year-old grandmother Elizabeth Allen, since her conversion to Islam.

IG Zarah honeymoon

It is no longer news that the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar, got married to a northern beauty, Zarah, a few
weeks ago. The marriage rites which spanned several days, were lavish in all ramifications and attracted the crème of society. Indeed, it was an opportunity for people to see the other side of Abubakar, who, apart from being
in his finest elements, was all smiles while the ceremonies lasted.
Setting aside his demanding schedule, a smitten Abubakar took time off work to be with his new bride. The couple was in Dubai to
observe their honeymoon and just returned.

Korea eyes Nigeria railway project

The national railroad operator in South Korea, Korea Railroad Corporation, has commenced a discussion with the Nigerian Railway Corporation on the construction of a new railway system in Nigeria.
Already, Korail, as the Korean firm is called, has sent a proposal to the NRC for the building and maintenance of the railway
system.
The Korean delegation led by the Director- General, Korail, Mr. Jong Chul Won, presented the proposal on Friday during a meeting with
the Nigerian team at the NRC head office in Lagos.
A statement obtained by punch correspondent on Friday indicated that the meeting between the two railway corporations lasted about two hours.
In his presentation, Project Manager of Korail, Mr. Kwang Ho Choi said the firm was prepared to give Nigeria a world-class railway.
He stressed that the deal would be mutually beneficial to both countries, adding Korail would help to standardise the nation’s
maintenance culture as it was currently doing in countries such as Chile, Philippines and the
United States. Kwang said Korail would also help in the area of personnel training through its Koica
programme.
“Through Koica, we will set up a railway training school in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. We have submitted a first proposal and there will
also be contact from the Korean government to the Nigerian government. This, we believe,
will create employment on approval,” he said.
According to him, Korail has affiliations with countries such as France, Thailand, Philippines, Pakistan, Argentina and Cambodia.
Kwang explained that Korail operates passenger and freight trains throughout South Korea, besides being a railway construction company.
He said the Korean firm, in its 114th years of operations, had built a reputation on railway service punctuality and safety. “With experiences gathered since 1809 when the Korean railways started operations, it has made communications with customers a
priority on long distances, intercity services and freight rail service. Our metro services, capable of moving three million people with
an average of 289 trips daily, are among the best in the world with rolling stock of both diesel and electronic engines,” he said.
In his reaction, the NRC’s representative, Aminu Gusau, told the visiting Korean firm the
management of the corporation would consider its option and standards and get back to it.
According to him, the NRC has a way of dealing with partners most especially on issues that have to do with the future of the
Nigerian people.
He promised the Korean delegation led by the Director-General, Korail, Mr. Jong Chul Won,
that Korail’s proposal would be looked into appropriately.
Facilitator of the meeting, the Managing Director Netzone Engineering, Henry Owonka, said Nigeria at this time deserved a world-class railway system.
He expressed the hope that the Korean firm would use its expertise to expedite the Nigeria’s railway reform embarked upon by the Federal Government.

New Mikel is hot

Mikel Obi’s low scoring rate has attracted criticisms but the Chelsea midfielder seems to have rediscovered his scoring boots for the Blues and the Super Eagles, reports ’TANA AIYEJINA
Seven years, 185 games, one English Premier League goal. That is the story of Nigerian midfielder, Mikel Obi at English giants Chelsea.
Mikel has been a part of Chelsea since the summer of 2006. And having played 282 games, winning the FA Cup four times, the Europa League once, the Champions League.once and the Premier League once, Mikel has had a successful career.
But one thing had eluded the 26-year-old Nigerian over the years until September 21, 2013 — his first ever Premier League goal.
The goal finally came that Saturday against Fulham, when Frank Lampard’s 84th minute corner kick was headed down for Mikel by
skipper John Terry and the Nigerian blasted home frfom inside the six-yard box to the joy
of manager Jose Mourinho- who has often
been accused as having changed Mikel’s
attacking style to a more defensive approach-
and Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich.
The goal sealed a 2-0 win and brought back
the Blues to winning ways, having not won
since their second league match against Aston
Villa.
Mikel’s last goal in England before then was in
the 2006/07 season.
“I have been trying to reach him to no avail.
I’m absolutely delighted because I always tell
him he can do it whether at club or national
team level, but he has to move closer to the
goal area,” the man who is being credited to
have ‘revived’ Mikel, Super Eagles coach,
Stephen Keshi said.
Mikel actually started scoring again under
Keshi, after a four-year goals drought, and
the former Nigerian captain is hopeful that
his midfielder keeps the scoring touch.
“He (Mikel) has done it on one or two
occasions with the national team and there
should be nothing special about his scoring
for Chelsea. But a lot also depends on how
Mourinho wants him to play for the club. I
am sure the goals will start pouring in for him
now”, he said.
Even though he had represented Nigeria at the
2003 U-17 World Cup and scored a goal as
the Golden Eaglets crashed out in the group
stage of the tournament, Mikel’s awesome
talent caught the eye two years later at the
U-20 World Cup in Holland.
A mainstay in Coach Samson Siasia’s midfield,
Mikel served as the engine which powered the
entire Flying Eagles team to the final, only to
lose to a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina side
2-1.
His ball holding and dribbling skills, excellent
distribution of passes and leadership qualities
stood him out in a Nigerian side that also
paraded talented players like Taye Taiwo,
Chinedu Obasi, late Adefemi Olubayo, Dele Adeleye and several others.
These qualities didn’t escape world football ruling body, FIFA, who named the Jos-born
player second only to the inimitable Messi for
the Adidas Golden Ball for the tournament’s
best player.
Besides, Mikel also had an eye for goal,
converting a penalty kick in the crucial final
group game against Switzerland help the team
qualify for the second round.
After his performance in Holland, it was
apparent that Mikel’s Norwegian club, Lyn
Oslo, would no longer be able to hold on to
their prized jewel.
Mikel joined Chelsea in 2006 and after initial
glimpses of his attacking prowess, he scored
two FA Cup goals in his first season. Lots of
his fans were caught in awe as the player
gradually withdrew from his attacking style to
a more defensive role.
The story was not different even at national
team level. The 26-year-old scored at the
2006 and 2008 Africa Cup of Nations but had
to wait four years before he hit the back of
the net again in a 2013 AFCON qualifier
against Liberia in Calabar, courtesy of a
penalty kick.
However, traces of the old attacking Mikel began to show at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa, with the midfielder given a more attacking and free role by Keshi.
“Keshi gave Mikel a free role in the national team. He can move forward as he likes
because there is a capable backup in Lazio’s
Ogenyi Onazi. The coach wants more scoring
options,” Ben Alaiya, Eagles media officer
said.
He added, “In today’s football, all that matters
is the totality of the game. It’s a collective
effort where everybody must make a
contribution. Godfrey (Oboabona), a defender,
scores for his club and the national team. So,
I think Mikel’s scoring is an addition for the
squad.”
Mikel set up several goal moves as Nigeria
claimed the African title for the third time.
Reveling in his new-found form, Mikel headed
to Brazil with a fresh drive and to the relief of
his fans, he scored a superb goal for Nigeria
in the 2-1 defeat to Uruguay.
Former Golden Eaglets captain, Shegun Fetuga,
says Mikel’s latest goal is a good omen ahead
of the final 2014 World Cup qualifiers against
Ethiopia.
He said, “We saw him score for Eagles and
now that he has started scoring in the Premier
League, it will boost his morale. I am happy
that the positive development is coming at a
time we will be playing Ethiopia for a ticket to
next year’s World Cup.”

Messi set for tests on thigh injury

Barcelona has confirmed that Lionel Messi is set to undergo tests on a thigh injury sustained during the 2-0 win over Almeria on Saturday.
The Argentine star had opened up the scoring for Tata Martino's side in the 21st minute, but was withdrawn shortly afterwards with a knock.
And it has now been confirmed that he has a thigh problem, but the club is yet to determine how long it will be missing the 26-year-old. "Messi picked up an injury during the match against Almeria this afternoon," a statement on
the club's official website reads.
"The Barcelona forward sustained an injury to the biceps femoris in his right thigh and he will undergo additional tests on Sunday to determine the severity of his injury"
Messi has suffered numerous injury problems of late, most notably when a hamstring problem
kept him out of several matches at the end of last season.
His most recent knock renders him a serious doubt for Tuesday's Champions League trip to Celtic.

Petrol Price Crashes Below N97 in Abuja Filling Stations

Against the grain of public perception that once prices of products go up, they never come down, the pump price of premium motor spirit, PMS, popularly known as petrol, has not only crashed in some petrol filling stations, it has gone below the official amount fixed.
In some of the stations, petrol now goes for N95 per litre instead of the office price of N97 fixed by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, in January 2012.
The price had been raised from N67 to N140 on January, 2012, a move which took Nigerians unawares, sparking widespread outrage.
When government would not bow to demands from labour and civil society organisations, there was a mass action described by some as
the Nigerian Spring after the revolt going on at the time in some Arab nations.
The "Nigerian Spring" grounded business and government activities around the country for about two weeks before government reluctantly reduced the pump price from N140 to the current N97.
Although some economists say the price could drop further even to N50, the government had been saying it still needed to rise to encourage private investors whose investment in the building of refineries would bring about the
desired reduction.
But THISDAY's investigation show that some petrol stations such as Ismah Investment Ltd. in Kwali and Planet in Bako town close to Gwagwalada on the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have reduced their pump price by N2 to N95 per litre.
According to an official of Planet Petroleum who said he was running the business jointly with his brother but preferred not to be
named, they fixed that price based on what they bought from marketers in Lagos and Port
Harcourt.
He said they first sold for N96 when they procured the product at a slightly higher rate.
However, when the depot price dropped, they had to cut theirs to N95 for which it had been selling for the past two months, he told
THISDAY.
"Here we check the prevailing market prices to fix our own," he said. "Even if it moves down by just N1, we will adjust our price accordingly." He noted that even the Petroleum Products Marketing Company, PPMC, the marketing arm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, still sold for N97. The marketer however said DPK or kerosene was not affected by the price slash because it didn't make economic sense after buying a litre for N120
in Warri and spending N7 on transportation.
At Ismah filling station, an official, Jubril Iliyasu, said their decision to sell a litre of PMS at N95 was informed by a desire not to exploit
the buyers.

Al Qaeda: Nigerian Pleads Not Guilty in US Court

A Nigerian, Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi Friday pleaded not guilty in a United States federal court in Brooklyn to helping an al Qaeda
affiliate recruit English-speaking people in Nigeria.
Between January 2010 and August 2011, Babafemi allegedly travelled twice from Nigeria to Yemen to train with leaders of al Qaeda in
the Arabian Peninsula, known as AQAP, U.S. prosecutors said in a statement. Babafemi, 33, helped AQAP's media operations, including the publication of its magazine, called "Inspire," according to the statement.
The group's leadership, including Anwar al-Awlaki, was also alleged to have paid Babafemi almost $9,000 to recruit English-speaking
people from Nigeria, according to prosecutors.
Awlaki, a U.S. citizen born in New Mexico, was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011.
Babafemi, also known as "Ayatollah Mustapha," was charged with four counts in an indictment,
including conspiracy to provide material support to AQAP and use of firearms. He faces life in prison if convicted on firearms charges
and up to 15 years in prison on the material support charges.
U.S. District Judge John Gleeson yesterday ordered Babafemi held without bail. In August, a Nigerian court granted a U.S. request for
Babafemi's extradition.
The United States and other Western powers are closely watching Nigeria. They fear that al
Qaeda-linked militants could launch attacks from the West African nation, which is facing
an Islamist insurgency in its north.
"The defendant threw his efforts behind al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula's media, recruitment, and weapons training campaigns
in an effort to strengthen the terrorist group's grip on the region and extend its reach throughout the world," Loretta Lynch, the U.S.
attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a prepared statement Friday. "We will use every tool at our disposal to
combat al Qaeda and other terrorist groups in a manner consistent with our laws," Lynch
said.

Help Yobo hit 100 caps mark, Ladipo begs Keshi

The clamour for the recall of Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo increased during the week with the President-General of the Nigeria
Football and other Sports Supporters Club, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo adding his voice.
Dr. Ladipo who spoke in Lagos pleaded with the Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi to reconsider dropping of Yobo from the team
because of his contribution to the team in the past, adding that the captain may be used sparingly in matches.
“I feel that Yobo has contributed immensely to our football and should be given that honour to hit the 100 caps mark. He can be brought into matches to play for few minutes in just four matches. He is also experienced and can
motivate the team,” he said.
Also speaking on the bonus issue that almost threatened to tear the team apart, Dr. Ladipo said that the intervention of the sports
Minister, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi was in the right direction because, “nothing should distract the team from qualifying for the 2014
World Cup in Brazil.”
“We just have two more matches to qualify and the issue of bonus should not cause problem for the team now. I thank the minister for
coming to the rescue by promising to ensure they get the US$10,000 bonus they are demanding,”Dr. Ladipo said in Lagos.
On the hurdle posed by Ethiopia, the Supporters Club boss said, “The Ethiopians are good no doubt but I don’t see them stopping
Nigeria. If we prepare well, the Eagles will go to Addis Ababa and defeat them there but it is
not going to be easy.”
The first leg of the final qualifier has been fixed for October 13 by the Ethiopians who claim they play their matches on Sunday while
the return leg is scheduled for the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar on November 16, 2013.
Some players of the team have expressed optimism in the team’s qualification but Elderson Echiejile, a defender has cautioned on the effect of the high altitude in Addis Ababa while coach Keshi said he expects a tough match from the Ethiopians.

Football legend Lionel Messi arrives in court for tax fraud case

Four-time FIFA footballer of the year Lionel Messi and his father Jorge arrived in a Spanish court this morning Friday September 27th to answer charges of alleged tax fraud. Messi and his father are being accused of hiding over £3.4 million by filing incomplete tax returns from 2006 to 2009.
The charges against father and son was lodged by a state prosecutor in June 2013 claiming that they tried to conceal earnings from Messi's image rights - charges they both deny.
"I never take care of that (tax) stuff myself and neither does my father," Messi said in July. "We have our lawyers and our wealth managers
to take care of that and we trust them and they will sort this out. The truth is I don’t have a clue about all this and that is why we have people taking care of it."
Messi has already paid the Spanish authorities the unpaid tax he's owing plus interest (he paid £4.2m) but because tax fraud is a serious offense in Spain, he still has to make an appearance in court where the courts will
determine whether the case is pursued any further. Hopefully it will all end today!

Keshi backs Mikel to score more goals

The Super Eagles coach says that he has always believed that Mikel has the ability to score lots of goals for club and country and hopes that his first Premiership goal will be a taste of things to come. “I have been trying to reach him but to no avail but I am absolutely delighted because I always tell him he can do it whether at club or
national team level but he has to move closer to the goal area,” Keshi tells The Vanguard.
“He has done it on one or two occasions with the national team and there should be nothing
special about his scoring for Chelsea.
"But a lot also depends on where coach Jose Mourinho wants him to play for the club. I am sure the goals will start pouring in for him
now”, Keshi added.

8,000 Zamfara women protest over scarcity of husbands

No fewer than 8,000 women on Thursday matched to the Zamfara Hisbah Commission, seeking the state government’s assistance to
enable them to get married.
Led by the Chairperson of the Zamfara Widows Association, Hajiya Suwaiba Isa, and the patron, Alhaji Sa’idu Goshe, the women said they were not living a normal life and needed husbands to become whole.
“Many of us cannot afford two meals in a day because there are no men to support us,” they
said. The patron said the association had over 8,000
women, comprising 5,380 divorcees, 2,200 widows, 1,200 orphans and 80 others, whom
he said, were looking for men to marry.
He said the women also needed assistance to purchase household items such as beds, mattresses and other basic necessities needed
to move to their husbands’ houses.
Goshe appealed to the commission to assist the association in screening suitors for the women.
He said the screening would determine the suitors’ health status, source of livelihood and
ability to maintain a family.

Crisis in Education Worsens As Varsity Workers Start Strike Monday

A complete shutdown of the education sector looms, as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has directed its members to commence a nationwide strike from Monday in protest over the federal government's refusal to pay workers' salaries.

This is just as the National Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike over their unresolved grievances and in solidarity with the members
of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
SSANU said it would join the strike next Monday to protest the non-payment of the August salaries of some of its members in federal universities by the government.
The notice for the strike was signed by the SSANU President, Comrade Promise Adewusi, and copied to the Secretary to the Government
of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, vice-chancellors of some federal universities, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka
Wogu, the supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, and the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Julius Okojie.
The union issued an ultimatum, which would expire today. Adewusi, in the letter, noted that the union had already directed all of its
chapters to mobilise for the strike.
The letter reads in part: "The non-payment of our members' salaries in your universities, when some other federal universities had since
paid the August salaries, is viewed by our members as an act of punishment against them for working and this has made them restive. "Failure to pay by that day will be regarded as a conclusive act of aggression against the economic right and interest of our members.
"We shall then be at liberty to direct them on work stoppage as our members would no longer be in position to continue to transport
themselves to work. We urge you to take immediate steps to remedy this anomaly."
He said the union had earlier warned government in a letter dated 23 September that if the salaries of staff for the month of
August were not paid by the end of work today, the union would not hesitate to direct members to stop coming to work. He advised all stakeholders in the education sector to intervene and ensure that the salaries of workers are paid without further delay in the interest of industrial peace in the sector.
The affected universities are Federal University of Technology, Oweri (FUTO); University of Ilorin (UNILORIN); Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU); Abubakar
Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU); Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife; University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN); University of Calabar (UNICAL); University of Uyo (UNIUYO); and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
In the same vein, the NUT President, Dr. Michael Olukoya, said the lackadaisical attitude of the government to ASUU's demand is unfair. Speaking at a briefing in Abuja yesterday, Olukoya expressed the readiness of the union to join the strike in solidarity if the government does not accede to ASUU's request.
"The NUT will not hesitate to solidarise with ASUU if the federal government fails to honour the existing agreement reached with them in 2009. This constant posture of government not to honour agreements with various unions poses a great threat to the real development of the education sector. It also negates government's frequent talks of commitment to developing the education sector," he said. "We
see the current struggle of ASUU as truly nationalistic, patriotic and self sacrificing. We commend our university teachers for remaining solid and immovable in the face of
all threats," he added.
In another development, the supervising Minister of Education yesterday said all principals of Unity Colleges in Nigeria would
henceforth be subjected to aptitude tests to prove their capacity for the job. He said this at
a meeting with some principal officers of the ministry in Abuja, where he added that the test would be conducted to assess their knowledge of basic school management techniques.
This means that henceforth, directors and deputy directors of education, who have attained grade levels 16 and above would be required to write the aptitude test before being posted to schools.
"In a situation where so many people are qualified for a single position, what is the criteria for choosing those that should be
principals when they are all qualified by being directors or deputy directors?" Wike asked.
"The best option in a situation like that is to give everybody the opportunity to compete and then you get the best out of them before
sending them to various schools," he added.
Wike said the new policy was not aimed at downsizing, adding that existing principals of the school would also be subjected to the
same tests to determine their level of competence.
