‘Deportation’: Lagos govt violated constitution —Ohaneze Ndigbo

THE Pan-Igbo Cultural Organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo, has reacted to the deportation of some Igbo indigenes by the Lagos State government.
Addressing newsmen in Anambra State, chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Anambra State chapter, Elder Chris Eluemuno, said the action of the Lagos State government was not only callous, but a clear violation of Nigeria constitution, which guarantees every Nigerian the right to reside and work in any part of the country.
Elder Eluemuno also said what the Lagos State government did was inhuman and barbaric, aimed at insulting and embarrassing the Igbo race.
He said Ohaneze Ndigbo totally rejected the explanation put forward by the Lagos State government in defense of its action that the deportees were returned home for proper integration, and wondered if dumping and abandoning them under the bridge in Onitsha at midnight was the best way to return them to their homes for proper integration.
The Ohaneze chairman raised some questions, which he demanded the Lagos State government to answer, including “to whom were the deportees handed over?,
Why were non-Anambra indigenes among those also dumped and abandoned at Onitsha, why were they not taken to their respective home states? Have all the destitute and criminals that roam the streets of Lagos been returned to their home states for proper integration, why single out Ndigbo?”
Elder Elumuno told newsmen that the Igbo race and the good people of Anambra State demanded an unreserved apology from the Lagos State government, else it would be taken that its action was a calculated insult aimed at creating unnecessary friction between the Yoruba and Igbo who had been living and working peacefully in Lagos for decades.
He further stated that Igbos had contributed immensely to the development of Lagos State, warning that such an unhealthy development by the Lagos State government would not augur well for the unity of the community.
Ohaneze Ndigbo also condemned the role of the police in the deportation for escorting the vehicle that brought the deportees down to Onitsha from Lagos.
Accoding to him, “what a travesty of justice that security agents who are paid from public fund to protect the rights of citizens, were used to perpetuate the violation of the constitution they all swore to defend and protect.
“We urge the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the role of his men in this despicable and illegal action of the Lagos State government.”
The apex Igbo cultural organisation commended what it described at the mature and peaceful manner the Anambra State governor, Mr Peter Obi, had handled the deportation issue.
He said “We strongly support all the steps he has so far taken to seek reduess for the wicked and degrading treatment meted out to our people.
“We appeal to the good people of Anambra State especially those in Lagos, to remain calm, law abiding and go about their businesses without fear of molestation.

Lagos Heads to Supreme Court over Al-Mustapha, Shofolahan’s Acquittal

Unhappy with the acquittal of the Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha and an aide to the MKO Abiola family, Alhaji Lateef Shofolahan over the 1996 murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late business mogul, the Lagos State government has instituted an appeal at the Supreme Court, against the decision of the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal sitting in Igbosere, which acquitted and discharged him.
Giving the hint in Lagos, the state Attorney General (AG) and Justice Commissioner, Ade Ipaye, explained that the decision to appeal the appellate court’s judgement on the duo was as a result of the fact that there were enough and strong grounds of appeal.
Ipaye who spoke at a media briefing on Law and Order in the state, however refused to disclose the grounds of appeal..
He noted that, “Having carefully reviewed the decisions of the respected justices of the Court of Appeal, it is our humble view, that there are strong bases for appeal which the Supreme Court of Nigeria should have an opportunity to consider.”
“This step will also ensure that all issues are fully articulated, and the victim’s family, the defendants and the society are not deprived of the last window of opportunity provided by the Constitution for the resolution of the case.”
Ipaye also used the opportunity to refute reports compiled by both the Amnesty International (AI) and Social and Economic Rights Action Centre on the alleged forceful eviction of Ijora-Badia residents, stating the state government’s resolve to see to the welfare of residents in the state including protection of their rights.
“Illegal settlements, unapproved building and unsanitary conditions cannot be justified as these may end up in painful evictions or demolitions,” Ipaye added.

At Least 59 Killed in Latest Nigeria Violence

Authorities in northern Nigeria state say gunmen have killed at least 59 people in attacks on two small towns near the state capital, Maiduguri.

In one attack on Sunday, gunmen dressed in military uniforms entered the village of Konduga in Borno state and opened fire on the people praying at a mosque. They also set fire on nearby houses. Local police say 47 people were killed and 39 others were wounded. Some 50 houses were burned.

District chief of Konduga Zannah Masu Yale said some of the attackers were women. Borno state Governor Kashim Shettima visited the village Tuesday and promised compensation to the families of the victims.

In a separate attack, gunmen entered the village of Ngom on Saturday and killed 12 people.

There has been no claim of responsibility but officials suspect the radical Islamist group Boko Haram was behind the attacks.

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for many previous attacks in northeastern Nigeria, including some on mosques whose clerics have denounced religious extremism.

A new video emerged Monday by Boko Haram's self-declared leader, Abubakar Shekau. In it, he claims responsibility for several recent attacks, including those in the towns of Bama, Malam Fatori and Gamboru.

He also urged Nigerians to abandon the country's constitution and accept Islamic law.

Boko Haram has been blamed for thousands of deaths since launching an uprising against the government in 2009.

The group says it is fighting to impose a strict form of Sharia on Nigeria's Muslim-majority north. Its name in the Hausa language means "Western education is sinful."

Borno is one of three northeastern states where President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency and deployed additional troops in May to fight Boko Haram. Rights groups have criticized the military for heavy-handed operations they say have led to hundreds more deaths.

Suspected Islamist extremists have stormed a mosque and shot dead 44 worshippers as well as 12 other people in a nearby village in Nigeria's restive northeast.
The attacks are believed to be in revenge over citizen vigilante groups forming to help the military battle Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, which has been waging an insurgency since 2009.
"Gunmen believed to be Boko Haram members entered the mosque and opened fire on Muslim worshippers, killing 44," a senior government official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly of the attack in Konduga yesterday.
"We believe the attack was not unconnected with the co-operation residents are giving to security operatives in identifying and arresting Boko Haram members in their midst."
Nigeria's Daily Post reported that a further 26 people were being treated for injuries in hospital 35km away in the state capital, Maiduguri.
A local official said suspected Boko Haram members also raided Ngom village in the nearby Mafa district and shot dead 12 people on Sunday.
Some residents spoke of the attackers in Konduga arriving wearing army camouflage, a tactic they have used in the past to disguise themselves, though those details had not been officially confirmed.
In recent weeks, the military has encouraged the formation of groups to help authorities locate and arrest members of Boko Haram.
The vigilantes have been credited with reducing the number of attacks, but some have warned that the situation could lead to further violence.
Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three northeastern states in May, as his troops carry out an offensive against the Islamist militants.
Boko Haram's insurgency has left at least 3600 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security forces, who have been accused of major abuses.
Boko Haram has claimed to be fighting for the creation of an Islamic state in Africa's most populous nation and largest oil producer, though it is believed to have various factions with differing aims.
Nigeria's 160 million population is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south.
Boko Haram
*A religious sect whose name roughly translates to Western education is forbidden. It was founded in 2001 by cleric Mohammad Yussuf.
*Has been fighting a brutal insurgency since 2009, denouncing the federal government as corrupt and demanding the imposition of Sharia law.
*Strongholds are the destitute cities of the north, where radical Islam took root as a protest against this poverty.

Britain denounces attack on Nigeria mosque

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) Britain's foreign office minister for Africa is condemning as "contemptible and cowardly" an attack on a mosque in northeastern Nigeria in which suspected Islamic extremists killed at least 44 worshippers.
Security agents say attackers struck under cover of darkness as residents were saying their dawn prayers at around 5:30 a.m. (GMT) Sunday at Konduga town, 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Maiduguri.
They said another 12 civilians died in a simultaneous attack outside Maiduguri.
"Attacking innocent people in a place of worship is a contemptible and cowardly act," Mark Simmonds said Tuesday.
He said Britain "stands with the government and people of Nigeria."
Sunday's attacks are the latest in a series of violent acts blamed on religious extremists wanting to oust the government and impose Islamic law.

US billionaire unveils plans for Hyperloop that will shoot passengers from LA to San Francisco in 30mins

Paypal billionaire Elon Musk, inset, has revealed plans for a radical new 'Hyperloop' transport system that could 'shoot' passengers from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 30 minutes.

Travellers enter aluminium pods mounted by skis either to their feet or to their cars, top. The pods, mounted above the ground on columns 50 to 100 yards apart, travel through steel tubes, reaching speeds of up to 800mph and travelling on a cushion of air. These images, left and right, show sketches of the passenger transport capsule and how it would look travelling through the steel tubes. Continue...

Musk told Bloomberg Business Week the system would be ‘like getting a ride on Space Mountain at Disneyland.’
‘It would have less lateral acceleration—which is what tends to make people feel motion sick—than a subway ride, as the pod banks against the tube like an airplane,' he said.
‘It would feel supersmooth.’
'The Hyperloop (or something similar) is, in my opinion, the right solution for the specific case of high traffic city pairs that are less than about 1500 km or 900 miles apart,' he claimed.

THE HYPERLOOP: HOW IT WORKS

Inside the tubes, hyperloop pods are mounted on thin skis made out of inconel,an alloy already used by Musk’s SpaceX firm that can withstand high pressure and heat.
Air is pumped into the skis via small holes to make an air cushion, and each pod has air inlets at the front.
An electric turbo compressor compresses air from the nose and routes it to the skis and to the cabin.
Magnets on the skis, plus an electromagnetic pulse give the pod its initial thrust; reboosting motors along the route would keep the pod moving at just below the speed of sound so the system does not produce sonic booms.

Ex-minister Femi Fani Kayode is claiming he dated Bianca Ojukwu

He dated Bianca? When? Before or after the late Odimegwu Ojukwu? #justasking.

Oh and he's written a few of articles about the Igbos and the Yorubas that I am sure some of you have read elsewhere. I deliberately didn't bring it here because, well, we shouldn't be focusing on tribe and writing long articles on it. We should focus instead on things that will move Nigeria forward.

Back to the matter, when did the long standing, intimate and beautiful relationship take place?

ASUU Strike: Negotiations continue Monday

Mr. Fagge told journalists in Abuja that although negotiations have continued, there’s nothing yet on the table. He said the union remains resolute in sustaining the ongoing strike action to ensure that the topical issues affecting the nation’s university system are tackled decisively once and for all.
The Chairman of the Universities Needs Implementation Committee and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam made this known to newsmen in Abuja ON Tuesday  after a three-hour meeting between ASUU and the government team.

According to him, the grey areas would soon be resolved going by the progress made so far.
He said “Well the meeting continues next week Monday. We made some progress, we had very fruitful discussion with ASUU and we have agreed we are to meet again on Monday at about three o’clock. When we meet again we will be able to arrive at some decisions.”
“We believe that when we meet next week Monday with ASUU we would have moved from where we are to the next stage. I can assure Nigerians that the President has taken this seriously as you can see the Minister of Finance and two ministers of education, Distinguished Senator, DG Budget, Minister of Labour, every person who should be here is here to show concern.”
He went on: “I have spent so much time as governor being part of this which shows the seriousness which the President attaches to what is happening in the education sector. As I leave here, we are going to the second meeting which is on the Needs Assessment. We want to make sure that we solve this problem so we are holding meetings round the clock.”
“We are making progress in the negotiations and we hope that we will be able to solve this problem soonest. The stage that we are now we are hoping that when we meet next week, we should be able to conclude on the discussion.”
“The fact that we were unable to conclude today does not mean that the meeting is deadlocked; very fruitful meeting and I believe that when we meet next week, we will arrive at some conclusion. That is what I can tell you.” He stated.
The ASUU President, Comrade Nasir Isa Fagge, however, declined to comment on the agreements so far reached at the closed door meeting.
